'Greenhouse Effect' To Warm Fields COLUMBUS, Ohio (UPI) In about 100 years, the average nia and New Jersey and states temperature of Ohio, Pennsylvain their vicinity is expected to be about 4 degrees warmer than now, scientists say. The 100 years is the estimate for how long it may take to double the current level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This warming trend is the result of what is known as the greenhouse effect, and it offers both advantages and disadvantages to residents of such states as West Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware. "If there's a change in the climate, it's bound to benefit someone somewhere, but it'll have an opposite effect elsewhere," said John H.

Mercer, senior research scientist with the Ohio State University's Institute of Polar Studies. "Warmer summers might be an advantage in London (where June, July and August tend to be cool) but not in New York (where summer sometimes can be nearunbearable for sweltering inly habitants)," he said. From Your Son, Edward "It might benefit Canada's season, but in our Corn growing Belt, you'd probably get corn shriveling on the vine," said Merwho wrote one of the first cer, articles warning of the Greenhouse Effect.

The greenhouse effect is expected to come about because of increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as the result of burning fossil fuels. The carbon dioxide is transparent to the sun's hot, and consequently short, rays, Mercer said, so they pass through easily to the earth's surface. When they're radiated back from earth, however, they've cooled, become longer and are trapped carbon dioxide, he said. It's easy to see how the greenhouse effect got its name. The 3- to 5-degree warming trend is for the world on an It would be highest in the average.
