J. State's third in nation in deaths from AIDS TRENTON, N.J. (AP) In the wake of two recent AIDS deaths in New Jersey, health officials say the state's large hom*osexual population and high number of intravenous drug users are responsible for the increasing number of AIDS cases. Recent figures show that New Jersey, with 496 cases reported since 1982. has the fourth-highest number of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome cases and ranks third nationally in AIDS deaths, with 303.

Among those who have succumbed to the mysterious disease were 38 inmates. of state prisons, including two who died this month. number of cases is increasing and we believe the hom*osexual population in this state and along border cities in New York, plus the large number of drug users, are pushing the number of cases up," Health Department spokesman Thomas Hagy said Friday. Kim White of the Department of Corrections said the latest prson death from AIDS was Heriberto Echevario, 36, of Carteret. who died Wednesday at St.

Francis Medical Center here. He had been serving an 11- year sentence at the A Annandale State Prison for burglary before being transferred to the hospital. Another inmate, 30-year-old Timothy Lee of Elizabeth, diedon Jan. 9 at the medical center where he had been transferred last February from Leesburg State Prison. Lee had been serving a 15-year sentence for aggravated assault.

Ms. White said both men were suffering from the disease when they were incarcerated. She added that another six inmates are being treated for the illness, which attacks and destroys the body's immune system. Doctors began diagnosing the disease in 1982. Researchers believe AIDS is caused by an infectious agent, probably a virus, that is transmitted through intimate contact with bodily fluids, such as sem*n, blood or saliva.

According to the national Centers Disease Control in Atlanta, there have been 7,857 cases of AIDs reported nationwide since 1982, and 3,737 people have died. In New Jersey, 484 adults and adolescents and 12 persons under the age of 13 have contracted AIDS. Newark ranks fifth among the nation's cities with 217 cases reported, or 3 percent of the national total, said Charles Fallis of the CDC. He said New Jersey, with 303 deaths, ranks third in the number of AIDs deaths behind New York, with 1,438, and California, with 721. Ms.

White said prisoners suffering from AIDS usually are diagnosed when they undergo medical tests before being admitted to a state facility. "If we find that they have AIDS, they are confined to a special area of the hospital or at a prison infirmary," she said. Last September, Gov. Thomas H. Kean signed into law the "AIDS Assistance Act." which appropriated $75,000 for the establishment of an, AIDS education center at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark.
