26 THE JERSEY JOURNAL, MONDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1978 John Boland; was Weehawken en chief John J. Boland, 65, Weehawken's police chief between 1961 and 1972, died Friday in his home in Greeley, Pa. Boland joined the Weehawken police force in 1939. When World War Il broke out, he served as a sergeant in the Army's military police, stationed in Mississippi. At the end of the war, Boland rejoined the Weehawken police, and served as sergeant, lieutenant, and captain before becoming chief in 1961.

Weehawken Committeeman Charles Pizzuta, who was police commissioner from 1966 to 1968, said, "'He worked very progressively to better the department. The committeeman remembered" the retired police chief as good in civic life, church life, and police work. "He did make many improvements in the department when I was police commissioner," Pizzuta said. "He was really loved by the policemen. "Boland was one of the finest police officers we ever had in Weehawken," said Lawrence Hessner, who served under Boland as captain of detectives.

George Beck, long with consultants George Beck, a structural steel detailer for Ambec, which has offices in Jersey City, Manhattan, and Long Island, died yesterday in Englewood Hospital. Beck had worked in Ambec for 40 years, and was a partner in the firm. In 1948, he was one of the cofounders of Beck, Simon, and Mantel, consulting engineers, Jersey City. A graduate of the Rensselaer Polytechnic In- stitute, Troy, New York, he was also on the Board of Education in Fort Lee. and a trustee of the Fort Lee Jewish Community Center.

He lived in Fort Lee for the past 25 years, after having lived in Union City for 11 years. A 10:45 a.m. service will be held for him tomorrow in the GuttermanMusicant-Kreitzman Funeral Home. Hackensack. which is handling arrangements.

Mother, 89, daughter stricken day apart Edith 1. Flaherty, a resident of Harrison for the past 55 years, died Friday in her home. On Saturday, her daughter. Nancy Flaherty. died in the National Orthopedic Rehabilitation Hospital in Alexandria, Va.

Mrs. Flaherty, 89, was born in Reading. and had been principal of the Emerson Grade School. there. before moving to Harrison.

In Harrison, she was a cafeteria worker for RCA for 20 years, before retiring 14 years ago. She was a charter member of VFW Post 340. Women's Auxiliary, and the American Legion Post 282. Women's Auxiliary, both Harrison, and also belonged to the Harrison PTA. and the Senior Citizens of Holy Cross Church.

The Rev. William J. Hausmann will officiate at 10 u. service tomorrow in the Mulligan Funeral Home, Harrison, which is in charge of the arrangements. She will be buried in Beverlv National Cemetery, Beverly.

Miss Flaherty. 52, was a resident of Harrison for 40 vears. She had lived in Falls Church, for the past two years, and i in Washington, D.C.. for three years before that. She had worked a as a secretary at different times for the Prudential and New England Mutual Insurance companies, Newark, the Social Security regional office in Newark, the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, and Labor.
