The Jersey Journal from Jersey City, New Jersey (2024)

I Studious Edward Beller 'Always Had the Right Answer' By JULIA STURM Je was frequently referred to as the "Oracle of Delphi" and as a "walking Edward Beller derived personal satisfaction from his daily study of the almanac, encyclopedia and atlas, said his daughter, Roberta, a teacher in the Weehawken school system. eighbors at the Otto Mack Funeral Home said: "He always had the right answer." -0- HE LISTENED IN daily on xhe early morning TV educational programs "Sunrise Semester," both on Greek classics and mathematics; and "Conti-. mental Classroom," the study of languages. Mr. Beller, a retired railway mail clerk, died Sunday of a heart attack in his home, 111 Lake Jersey City, at the age of 63.

He was retired five years ago on disability. months the Army spent $350,000 to repair installations there. He indicated that if elected he will aid Hudson County municipal and longshore officials in efforts to reopen the terminal. Last night at the Hotel Plaza Williams received the endorsem*nt of Local 1470, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, AFL-CIO, the state's largest union local. He wound up his Hudson tour at a West New rally sponsored by Mayor Armellino.

Henry Kamna, While on Stroll Journal City: Oct: 1958 Continued a Democratic majority that reach 95,000. Williams met the Jersey City Commissioners at City Hall. He was first received by Mayor Witkowski and Witkowski's supporters (among whom are a sprinkling of Republicans) in the assembly chamber. Then he was escorted to the offices of Commissioners McLaughlin, Berry and Murray, in that order. Each commissioner reassured Williams that he will receive his full support in the Nov.

4 election and the whole City Hall operation went off so smoothly, especially the, timing of his guided tour there, with no rivals coming face to face, that Williams, if he didn't know better, might have suspected that there's nothing but unity in the old building. -0- BEFORE WILLIAMS arrived GROGAN GROGAN at City Hall, 19 Victory ward leaders and co-leaders met in Witkowski's office to make "a public announcement" of their support for the Row A Democratic candidates. In a joint statement they blasted Berry, McLaughlin and Murray and observed that it would be foolhardy for Witkowski's followers to vote Republican Nov. 4 because this would be a "pat on the back" for Commissioner Hickman, who, the satement said, "used many Victory workers last year and then abandoned them after Election Day." In the evening two Seventh Ward Victory Clubs, both the North and South End groups, pledged support to. Witkowski and the Row A ticket.

Charles Balcer, Fourth Ward Victory leader, announced that the rally his organization planned for tomorrow night at the People's Center has been canceled so that the ward's Victory supporters can attend Witkowski's rally at the Hotel Plaza tomorrow night. -0- THROUGHOUT his tour yesterday Williams was accompanied by Deegan and the Democratic Congressional and Freeholder candidates. At most of the stops Williams touched upon the issues: rent control, unemployment and what he termned the "stubborn partisanship" of Republicans in Washington and the "anti-social solidarity" of Republicans in Trenton. At Jersey City's Ninth Ward Democratic Club meeting he said that the "dynamic and co-operative statesmanship of the Democratic 85th Congress has been shabbily rewarded by the President of the United States." At Commissioner Murray's suggestion, Williams made an unscheduled visit to the Caven Point Army terminal which is due to close Saturday. -0- THERE AN ARMY sergeant at first refused to let Williams and the local Democrats pass through the terminal's gate.

Williams said he considered the Caven Point shutdown "unusual" in view of the fact that in recent Jersey City Man Was Known as a 'Walking Encyclopedia' Fod a time Mr. Beller, who studied radio engineering, had a. radio store on the Boulevard at Griffith Street. --0- 'HE LIKED TO WORK with his hands," his wife Bertha said.

He modernized the kitchen in his home, building all the cabinets himself, and built a bay window in the front of the house after he pulled out the store front, where his late mother-in-law operated a store. He owned the house in which he had lived over 40 years. He was born in New York City but had lived most of his life in Jersey City.
