Morning News from Paterson, New Jersey (2024)

JANUARY 17, 1979 The News, Passaic County, N.J. FBI Observes Johnny Dio's Funeral United Press International NEW YORK Funeral services were held Tuesdayfor one of the city's leading labor racketeers, John "Johnny Dio" DioGuardi, who died last week in the Lewisburg, Pa. federal penitentiary, Police and FBI agents cruised the Bronx neighborhood of two-family brick houses while some 60 people attended a funeral service at St. Theresa's Church for the 64-year-old mobster. Friends and family of DioGuardi left the church some crying and others trying to shield their faces from photographers and piled into six black limousines.

Burial was at St. John's Cemetery in Queens. DioGuardi, who had suffered from diabetes and a heart condition for many years, began to hemmorhage in his jail cell Thursday and was taken to the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, authorities said. He died of a heart attack the next day. Dioguardi came out of the Lower East Side and was a nephew of another crime figure, James Plumeri, who as Jimmy Doyle, managed a number of wellknown prize fighters.

Dioguardi rose through the ranks of the Lucchese crime family and hit the big time in the 1940s, when he was known as the top shakedown artist in the garment district. In 1937, when special prosecutor Thomas Dewey extracted a guilty plea from Dioguardi for extorting payments from the trucking industry, Dewey called Dioguardi "a young gorilla who began his career at the age of 15." But Dioguardi went on to become a creator of so-called paper unions that gave employers "sweetheart" contracts. In the 1950s, he became an ally of the Jimmy Hoffa when Hoffa successfully won the presidency of the Teamsters Union despite federal investigations. Dioguardi was indicted for arranging the acid-throwing attack that blinded crusading labor columnist Victor Reisel in 1956. But charges were dropped when 'government witnesses changed their minds about testifying.

In 1967, Dioguardi received a fiveyear sentence and a $10,000 fine for bankruptcy fraud involving a kosher meat company. He was finishing that prison when he was convicted in 1973 of stock fraud in a case involving a car-leasing firm. Dioguardi's death was announced through a paid death notice in Monday's editions of the Daily News. Dioguardi, a resident of the Bronx, is survived by his wife, Anne, a son, and a daughter. SWAT Teams Set For Super Bowl Protection United Press International MIAMI Police are readying a strike force of two dozen anti-terrorist experts to stand guard at the Orange Bowl during Sunday's Super Bowl football game. "The threat is there, you have the potential," said Capt. Mike Cosgrove, who heads the strike force. "The whole point of terrorism is publicity.

A disruption of the Super Bowl would be a big plus for any of the terrorist groups." The team is undergoing intensive training this week in sniper and bomb detection, hostage negotiation, kidnapping, demonstration prevention, control. dignitary protection As for arms and equipment, Cosgrove said the group composed mostly of members of the department's SWAT team he commands will have "Everything the whole nine yards. Cosgrove said the team will consist of about 10 plainclothes intelligence officers trained to recognize terrorists who will filter through the crowd of 80,000 and another 10 to 15 members who will station themselves near danger spots, including the playing field. In addition, he said, a hostage negotiation team will be at the stadium and a helicopter will be "stashed away within seconds of the Orange Bowl." The anti-terrorist team will not concern itself with routine police matters such as drunks and fights, he said, leaving those to the 130 uniformed policemen who will be at the bowl.

Cosgrove said he was. worried about the movie "Black set for a television showing Sunday. It won't be shown until after the game between Pittsburgh and Dallas, but CBS has been promoting the film. "We're not happy about that (the movie)," Cosgrove said. The film is about a suicide attack on the Orange Bowl during a Super Bowl with the use of a blimp.

Hijackers Surrender Peaceably United Press International EIRUT, Lebanon Five Lebanese Moslems armed with guns and hand grenades Tuesday hijacked a Middle East Airlines jet with 73 passengers and nine crew to protest the disappearance of their religious leader last August. After a six and a half hour ordeal of flying from Beirut to Amman to Cyprus and back to Beirut, the gunmen surrendered and released all of their hostages early Wednesday after being allowed to hold a news conference. The gunmen said they were followers of the Imam Musa Sadr, a Shiite Moslem leader in Lebanon who disappeared mysteriously with two companions while on a visit to Libya last August. Following negotiations with Lebanese officials and Shiite Moslem leaders, a thin, bearded hijacker dressed in dark clothes entered the terminal building and handed out copies of a 10-point statement in English and Arabic titled, "A cry to the world's conscience." "Our people tried their best, with the peaceful demonstrations and lawful means, to solve this tragic problem," the statement said.

The statement blamed Libya for kidnapping Sadr and his two companions last Aug. 31 and condemned Arab and international opinion for remaining silent on Sadr's disappearance. "We apologize to the whole world for resorting to violence, even though the deaf ear of responsibles and the dead conscience of the world have pushed us to this method," the statement said. The hijacker spoke nervously at first but seemed to gain confidence as he continued. He told journalists that, "We are giving ourselves up to the Lebanese authorities and hope they will take into consideration that we harmed no one." But he declared that "even the innocent should pay for the human rights (violation) the kidnap of Sadr We are releasing all the people," he said.

"We are sure the imam and his two companions are still alive," he said, without elaborating. The hijacker then went back to the plane. Soon afterward, two orange, yellow and white Middle East Airlines buses rolled up to the Boeing 720B and the passengers and gunmen came down from the plane. Abdul Wadud Hajjaj, 34, a Lebanese journalist aboard the plane, was released to attend the news conference. "They treated us well," Hajjaj said, but reported that four people on board the aircraft required oxygen in the course of the ordeal.

The plane was taken over in flight from Beirut to Amman, diverted to Cyprus where it was refused permission to land, and returned to Beirut. Hearing Today In Frisco Killings United Press International SAN FRANCISCO A preliminary hearing for Dan White, charged with the murders of San cisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, will be held Wednesday in a municipal courtroom ordered closed to the news media and the public. The hearing is required to determine there is enough evidence to try White for the fatal shootings of Moscone and Milk, an avowed hom*osexual, in their City Hall offices Nov. 27. White, 32, surrendered shortly after the shootings and later confessed to shooting the two in a fit of rage because Moscone had decided not to point him to the seat he vacated on the city's lawmaking body, the Board of Supervisors.

He has pleaded innocent and Douglas Schmidt, White's attorney, said he will mount a defense based on diminished mental capacity. Schmidt has subpoenaed nearly 50 witnesses for the hearing, including new Mayor Dianne Feinstein and most members of the Board of Supervisors, former supervisors, a judge, a former police chief and dozens of City Hall employees. The order for a closeddoor hearing was requested by Schmidt under a little-used state law which allows a defendant that option. Schmidt said he acted to protect his client's interest, and said disclosures at the hearing, at which details of the shootings will finally be divulged, "may be misrepresented by the news media." Additionally, Schmidt said, the information to come out at the hearing may figure materially at White's later trial and he does not want it known publicly beforehand. White, a former policeman and fireman who was known as a law-and-order supervisor, resigned from the 11-member board last fall, saying he could not afford to remain in the post, which pays $9,600 a year.

However, five days later he announced he had changed his mind and wanted his job back. White surrendered within an hour at a nearby police station. Her pleasant ways smiling face. Are a pleasure to recall. She had a kindly word for each. And she died beloved by all. Her life was so unselfish.

And for others she did live. Not for what she would receive. But only for what she would give. Her face is ever before us. A voice we will never forget.

A smile that will last forever. In memory we see her yet. If all the world were ours to give. We would give it, yes and more. To see the face of the one we love.

Come smiling through the door. They say time heals all sorrows and helps us to forget. But time, so far, has only proved. How much we love and miss you yet. nearby Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Md. H.W. MURPHY, administrator of the Maryland hospital, described her condition as "fair, bright. She is responding well to the staff working around her." Murphy said the woman has "suffered paralysis of her left arm and both legs; and it is my information, as a layman, that the onset of such a condition means it will run its course." A Pennsylvania health official, Dr. William Parham, said the Amish refuse immunizations because of a belief that "afflictions are sent from God and there could be no intervention." "They believe that if you prevent one disease, you'll get another," Parham said.

"It's up to God to remove the disease.".
