OPITO Safety Training and Certification Programs, Courses and Assessments for the Oil & Gas Industry
Founded in 1977, OPITO is the not-for-profit organization that defines the standards in the offshore oil and gas industry. By continually reviewing the safety course curriculum OPITO makes sure that working offshore continually gets safer and less hazardous. Since 1991 the organization has set the bar for safety in the oil and gas industry. Each year it is training more than 250,000 people around the world.
OPITO develops technical and safety training standards which will act as the oil and gas industry benchmarks and provide best practice guidance and quality assurance for standards and competence management. OPITO, has also developed standards for the renewable energy industry, with a suite of safety and technical training Standards, and qualifications, designed to address the skills requirements.
OPITO standards are created and maintained by oil and gas industry workgroups incorporating industry representatives, training providers as well as industry associations. When it comes to OPITO standards training programs, these workgroups provide the direction of courses from a content, objectives, assessment criteria or instructor requirements.
Another initiative of the OPITO help seafarers make move into oil, and gas and the scheme is undertaken in partnership with the UK’s Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB). It aims to highlight the links between BOSIET training requirement for offshore workers and the maritime industry’s STCW certification.

Oil & Gas Basic Emergency Response Training
- Basic H2S Training: The H2S training program is for personnel that are or could be, working in an environment that could become contaminated by H2S gas.
- BOSIET with EBS / BOSIET with CA-EBS: Basic Offshore Safety Induction & Emergency Training (BOSIET) with Emergency Breathing System (EBS) orBOSIET with Compressed Air Emergency Breathing System (CA-EBS)

- TFOET Training: Tropical Further Offshore Emergency Training (TFOET) is a Renewal of FOET for the Personnel Working in the Offshore Oil and Gas Industry in a Tropical Environment.

- CA-EBS with T-BOSIET/THUET/TFOET:Compressed Air Emergency Breathing System CA-EBS (delivered in conjunction with T-BOSIET/THUET/TFOET)
- Escape Chute Training - Initial Training:The Escape Chute Training program is for personnel that require offshore installation and vessel escape chute training in addition to BOSIET, FOET, T-BOSIET or T-FOET.
- Basic Onshore Emergency Response (BOER): The Basic Onshore Emergency Training program is designed for personnel in the onshore oil and gas industry.

Oil & GasSpecialist Emergency Response Training
- Major Emergency Management - Initial Response Training (MEMIR): The MEMIR training is directed towards individuals who are either designated as being in charge of, are members of, or provide support to an emergency management team in an emergency.
- Plant Manager/ Incident Commander Initial Response Training (PMIC-IR): The program is designed for personnel who are about to be appointed to a Plant Manager/ Incident Commander position or who are already serving as a Plant Manager/ Incident Commander.
- Helicopter Refuelling Training: The program is for personnel who are to be involved in helicopter refueling activities offshore.
- Helideck Emergency Response Team Member (HERTM): Helideck Emergency Response Team Member Training for Offshore Personnel Appointed to the Role of HERTM
- Helideck Emergency Response Team Member (HERTM) Further Training: OPITO HERTM Refresher Training for Offshore Personnel Appointed to the Role of HERTM
- Helideck Emergency Response Team Leader (HERTL): The program is personnel who are to be appointed to the role of a Helideck Emergency Response Team Leader (HERTL).
- Helideck Emergency Response Team Leader (HERTL) Further Training: This training is designed for currently-appointed OPITO-certified HERTLs that are required to revalidate their OPITO HERTL certification.
- The target group for Offshore Helideck Operations Initial Training program is personnel who are to be appointed to the role of an Offshore Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO) and/or Offshore Helideck Assistant (HDA).
Oil & GasEmergency Response & Rescue Vessels (ERRV) Training
- Command and Control for ERRV Masters and Mates: This training is for qualified ERRV deck officers - Masters and Mates.
- The training course is designed to meet the emergency response training and assessment requirements for the role of an ERRV Advanced Medical Aider.
- ERRV Crew Daughter Craft Coxswain (DCC) Training: The training is designed for personnel that intend to work in the role of Daughter Craft Coxswain aboard an Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel (ERRV) and are already existing FRC Coxswains.
- ERRV Crew Fast Rescue (FRC) Boatman: The training is designed for personnel that intend to work in the role of Fast Rescue Craft Boatman aboard an Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel (ERRV).
- ERRV Crew Fast Rescue Craft Coxswain: The training is designed for personnel that intend to work in the role of Fast Rescue Craft Coxswain aboard an Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel (ERRV) and are already existing FRC Boatman.
- ERRV Crew Initial Training Shipboard Operations (ITSO): The training is designed for personnel that intend to work onboard an Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel (ERRV).
- Ongoing Onboard Development and Training Program (OODTP) for ERRV Crew: This program is for all crew currently working onboard an ERRV.
Oil & GasTraining for Technical Roles
- This training is for personnel wishing to become competent in the Banksman and Slinger role.
- Offshore Crane Operator Stage 1 (Introductory) Training: This training program has been designed for personnel that have little or no crane operating experience and wish to gain theoretical and practical knowledge of offshore crane operations.
- Offshore Crane Operator Stage 2 Training: This training program has been designed for personnel who have successfully completed the OPITO Offshore Crane Operator Stage 1 Introductory Training and wish to progress to the next stage.
- Offshore Drilling Industry Greenhand: This has been designed for new entrants to the offshore industry.
- Rigger Training Stage 1 & Supervised Workplace Experience, Competence Assessment, and Re-assessment of Competence Stages 2 through 4.
- Elected Safety Representative (ESR) Development Training:ESR Devepment Training (4 certifications) - Major Accident Hazards; Risk Analysis; Root Cause Analysis; and Inspection / Auditing / Presentation.
- OSR Initial Training is designed for elected safety representatives anf OSR Refresher Training foris designed for re-elected safety representatives.
- Competence Assessor Training: This program is designed for individuals within an organization who are designated to be competence assessor.
- Internal Verifier Training: This program is designed for individuals within an organization who are designated to be internal verifiers.
- Authorised Gas Tester: This program is designed to meet the initial training and knowledge assessment requirements for personnel preparing to work as Authorised Gas Testers.
- Initial training program has been designed for personnel who intend to act, or are already acting, as a Performing Authority in the workplace & the refresher training program has been designed for personnel who currently act as the performing authority in the workplace.
- Gas Monitor Training: This program is designed to meet the initial training and knowledge assessment requirements for personnel preparing to work as Gas Monitors.
- Blaster-Sprayer Training Level 1: Blaster/Sprayer Training presents the core blasting, painting and spraying skills required by personnel who want to work as an industrial blaster/sprayer.
- Fireproofing training presents the coating skills required by personnel who are required to work as an industrial fireproofer.
- Designed for personnel associated with the preparation of dangerous goods for transport by sea to and from an onshore supply base and an offshore installation.

- Confined Space Awareness: This training program is designed for personnel across the energy sector who require a theoretical understanding and awareness of Confined Spaces, associated hazards and guidance.
- Confined Space Entry: This training program is designed for personnel across the energy sector with an existing theoretical understanding and awareness of confined spaces, associated hazards and guidance and require the corresponding practical skills necessary for entry into a confined space.
- Rescue from a Confined Space: This training program is designed for personnel across the energy sector with an existing knowledge and understanding of confined spaces.
